Tragic Drowning at R. Shaefer Heard Park: 22-Year-Old Man Recovered After Search Efforts

Troup County, GA – July 2, 2025

Authorities have confirmed the tragic drowning of a 22-year-old man at R. Shaefer Heard Park near West Point Dam on the evening of July 1, 2025.

According to a news release from the Troup County Sheriff’s Office, emergency services were dispatched to the scene at approximately 7:10 PM after a 911 call reported a swimmer in distress who had gone underwater and failed to resurface. Responding agencies included the Troup County Fire Department, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Upon arrival, rescue teams quickly began a coordinated recovery effort. Divers from the Troup County Fire Department Dive Team scoured the area by boat and underwater. However, operations were temporarily halted due to the arrival of a severe storm, which made conditions too dangerous for divers to continue.

Despite the delay, the recovery resumed once conditions stabilized. At approximately 10:45 PM, divers located and recovered the victim’s body. He has been identified as Lorenzo Collins, a 22-year-old resident of Stockbridge, Georgia.

Authorities state that the incident appears to be a tragic swimming accident, and no foul play is suspected at this time. There are no additional details available as the investigation continues.

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office and local agencies extend their condolences to Mr. Collins’ family and friends.

Safety Reminder: As summer temperatures rise and water recreation increases, officials urge swimmers and boaters to exercise caution around lakes and dams, wear life jackets when swimming in open water, and remain aware of changing weather conditions.
